Ocean Beach is relatively unnoticed by the average visitor to San Diego – unless the visitor is a dog or dog owner, that is; 'OB', as its known to the locals, is a small, friendly, neighborhood community, situated next to Sea World in San Diego. For visitors who love to vacation with their dog, Ocean Beach is 'doggy heaven' to both dog owners and dogs a like!

Where to Stay in Ocean Beach With a Dog

Perhaps the most obvious choice for dogs and their owners to choose to stay in Ocean Beach is the Ocean Villa Inn, located directly on Dog Beach. Ocean Villa Inn is comprised of 50 guest rooms and dog owners have the choice of adequately sized downstairs rooms, complete with microwave, coffee maker and fridge.

Although the downstairs rooms don't have an ocean view, they are located 100 yards from Dog Beach and each room opens out onto a private patio with direct access to the communal grassed, fenced-in 'dog run'. There are studios to choose from too but these do not have access to the 'dog run'.

Ocean Villa Inn itself is dog friendly; from doggy treats at reception to a dog wash after a sandy day on the beach, dogs are thought of with as much care (if not more!) as their owners. Dogs have the chance to make many new friends at Ocean Villa Inn!

Visiting Dog Beach at Ocean Beach

Dog Beach is located at the northern end of Ocean Beach and is one of the few beaches in California where dogs can run leash free; the paved walkway which runs from Dog Beach, past the back of Ocean Villa Inn and parallel to the river estuary is popular with both cyclists and dog owners too. There is free parking at Dog Beach and the beach is often busy with both local and visiting dog owners.

Dog Friendly Stores in Ocean Beach

It is not an uncommon sight to walk down Newport Avenue (the main street of Ocean Beach) and see dog water bowls outside of many stores, placed there by dog friendly store owners; in fact, dogs are welcome in many stores (on a leash), but be sure to ask before taking a dog into the store. One popular place to visit for a coffee with a dog is Jungle Java on Newport Avenue.

Dog Friendly Jungle Java Cafe in Ocean Beach

Jungle Java serves coffee for dog owners and water for dogs in a pretty and secluded hideaway, directly off the main street; the only requirement is that dogs must be on a leash. Jungle Java is a quiet courtyard, set partly underneath a canopy cover, within a garden of plants and water features; plants and local artwork are available for purchase too.

Dog Friendly Ocean Beach

There are many other stores, cafes and places to visit with a dog in Ocean Beach too; one of the most popular places for 'apres' - beach activity is probably the self service dog wash on Voltaire Street! Big dogs, little dogs, fat dogs and skinny dogs all live in harmony in San Diego's Ocean Beach community – and choosing a Californian dog vacation in Ocean Beach is sure to hold treasured memories with both dog and dog owner too!
